The Dilkusha maze: Hide-and-seek in Dhaka's historical 'bhulbhulaiya'!

You have surely played hide-and-seek in your childhood. But have you ever played it in a proper labyrinth or maze in Dhaka? Probably not!

A labyrinth or 'bhulbhulaiya' was constructed in our city's Dilkusha area. The image shown here is from the 1880s,portraying a maze tower and the maze, designed for playing hide-and-seek. It was a part of the Dilkusha garden house. 

According to the Photographic Album of Old Dhaka, edited by Iftikhar-ul-Awwal, the Dilkusha garden house was built in 1866 by Nawab Khwaja Abdul Ghani. 

"This garden house comprised large ponds, lakes, fruit, and flower trees of various types, amusement homes and other residential buildings," Iftikhar-ul-Awwalinformed in the photography book.
