Bangladesh seeks Sweden’s support for smooth LDC graduation

Bangladesh has sought Sweden's continued support to make its LDC graduation smooth and sustainable, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam said yesterday.

He hoped that Bangladesh's onward march to becoming a reliable partner in the global supply chain can be supported by Sweden. He was speaking as the chief guest at a reception held on Tuesday marking 50 years of bilateral relations between the two countries.

The State Minister said relations between Bangladesh and Sweden have strengthened over the years, with the emergence of new avenues of cooperation.

He recalled Sweden was among the first European countries to have recognised Bangladesh as an independent state in early 1972.

Ambassador of Sweden to Bangladesh Alexandra Berg von Linde, who hosted the reception, said celebrating 50 years of bilateral relations has been a milestone.

"Sweden is proud to have witnessed the impressive development journey of Bangladesh and contributed to it to some extent. Our partnership is going through a transition," she said.

"Today, we are glad to see an increased focus on expanding our trade and commercial relations, with a focus on sustainability, where Sweden and Swedish companies have a lot to offer," she added.

At the event at Bay's Gallery, the Embassy of Sweden also showcased an exhibition called "50 years through 50 voices" that captured the history of the two countries.

The reception also included a cultural programme, since December 13 is the day Sweden celebrates Lucia Day, one of the most famous and loved Swedish traditions.
