'Work together to address social problems'

Vice Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU) Prof SMA Faiz yesterday urged the teachers and the students of the university to work together to address the social problems, says a press release.
He made the remark while addressing the freshers' reception of the university's statistics department at its auditorium as the chief guest.
The VC also said each and every issue of the country concerns DU.
Terming DU students as 'junior scholars' and the teachers as 'senior scholars', he said they have to work together to address such issues.
Speaking on the history of DU, Prof Faiz said DU was modelled after the Oxford University. When it began its journey, the number of the students was only 877, but now it is above 33000.
An acute seat crisis is prevailing in the university, he added.
Prof Faiz also said that the university's seat crisis will be solved very soon as university authorities are giving maximum efforts to this end.
Saying the degrees DU offers are acceptable in educational institutes all over the world, the VC congratulated the freshers on obtaining the chance to get admitted in DU.
Chairman of the Statistics department Prof M Mazaharul Islam presided over the function while Dean of the Science Faculty Prof Tazmeri SA Islam and Prof M Obaidullah also spoke.
