Sinha murder: Death for Liakat, Pradeep; 6 get life sentence

Suspended police inspector Liakat Ali and former OC of Teknaf Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das were sentenced to death for killing Major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan.

Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail sentenced six others to life term imprisonment.

The six are dismissed Sub-Inspector (SI) Nandadulal Rakkhit, constables Sagar Deb and Rubel Sharma and police informants Md Nezamuddin, Nurul Amin and Ayaz Uddin.

Md Nezamuddin,  Ruhul Amin and Ayaz Uddin were also fined Tk 50,000, in default, they will have to serve six more months in jail.

The court acquitted seven others -- dismissed constables Safanur Karim, Kamal Hossain, Abdullah Al Mamun, Md Rajib, Md Abdullah; dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Liton Mia and dismissed APBn Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Shahjahan -- as allegation brought against them could not be proven.

Around 2pm today , the accused were brought to the court from Cox's Bazar district jail.

Security was beefed up at the court premises since this morning following the verdict.

Additional SP Rafiqul Islam of Cox Bazar district police told journalists, "We have taken adequate security measures ahead of the verdict. Additional police forces have been deployed at the court building premises."

On June 27, 2021, the Court of Cox's Bazar District and Sessions framed charges against them.

Sinha's elder sister filed the murder case with Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court against Pradeep, Nandadulal and several others on August 5 in 2020.

Police personnel are controlling traffic movement in the court building area.
