Suspicion of stealing cattle: Bangladeshi national beaten to death in Tripura, police say

A Bangladeshi national was lynched by villagers at a border village in Sipahijala district of the north-eastern Indian state of Tripura today on suspicion that he was a cattle-thief, police said.

A group of three alleged cattle-thieves entered the house of one Litan Pal at Kamal Nagar at around 1:30am local time and attacked him with knives when he tried to resist them.

"When the house-owner raised an alarm, the villagers caught one the cattle-thieves while the other two managed to escape. He was beaten to death by the villagers," officer-in-charge of Sonamura Police Station Nandalal Das said.

Das did not provide the identity of the victim but said the deceased was from Jambari in Cumilla district of Bangladesh.

The body was recovered by police and kept in a morgue at Sonamura sub-divisional town in the district.

Police said incident of stealing cattle is frequent in the border village and five such incidents had occurred there in the last two months.
