Failing to avail transport, garment workers block Rangpur-Dhaka highway
Garment workers today blocked Rangpur-Dhaka highway for four hours after they failed to get transport on their way to Dhaka, following the sudden decision to reopen export-oriented factories from tomorrow.
Hundreds of workers blocked the highway at Modern intersection of Rangpur city from 11:00am to 3:00pm, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
They left the highway after local administration assured them that they will take initiatives for the workers' commute to Dhaka maintaining health rules, said Abu Maruf Hossain, deputy commission (crime) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police.
The demonstrators said the factories will reopen tomorrow amid a nationwide "lockdown". No one considered how the workers will return. But if they fail to join work as per schedule, they will be sacked, they claimed.
They urged the government to lift restrictions on movement of public transport or to find an "alternative way" to facilitate their journey.
