Robber killed in Noakhali gunfight: Rab
An alleged ringleader of a robber gang was killed in a "gunfight" with Rapid Action Battalion in Hatia upazila of Noakhali early today.
The deceased -- Bahar (42), locally known as Bahar Dakat-- was a resident of Kalichar in Hatia, our Noakhali correspondent reports, quoting police.
Two Rab officials were also injured during the gunfight. They were given primary treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Jasim Uddin Chowdhury of Rab -11 Narayanganj headquarters said a team of Rab conducted a drive in Surjamukhi Canal around 3:45am after receiving information that a gang of robbers was preparingto commit a robbery there.
Sensing the presence of the Rab officials, they opened fire, forcing the elite force members to retaliate, triggering a "gunfight", said Md Jasim Uddin.
Bahar was hit by a bullet fired by his cohorts, he added.
Bahar was taken to Hatia Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him'brought dead', said Dr Sourov, a medical officer of the health complex. There was a bullet mark on his check, he added.
The Rab team also arrested four robbers -- Md Alauddin (48), Md Yusuf Majhi (45), Md Murad (30) and Shanto Sheikh (25) – from the spot.
They seized six locally made firearms, seven bullets and an engine boat used for robbery from the scene, the Rab official said.
Superintendent of Noakhali Police Md Alamgir said Bahar and his associates used to loot and kidnapped farmers for ransom in the Meghna River areas.
