3 hurt after locals, forest officials clash in Gazipur
A forest official, his assistant and a local were injured after a group of locals allegedly attacked them and torched their motorcycle in Gazipur yesterday.
A case accusing six locals was filed with the Sreepur Police Station today, Liakat Ali, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station said.
Singratoli Forest Beat Officer Md Selim, 50; his assistant Md Golam Robbani, 35; and a local Abdul Jabbar, were injured during the incident at Sreepur upazila, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
According to witnesses, the forest officials and locals got into an argument which eventually led to a fight at Lohgach area of the upazila.
Locals have alleged, forest officials often harass or create trouble when they try to build houses on their own land and the forest officials file false cases against them if the locals don’t comply.
Allegations of corruption have also been brought against the forest officials.
Forest officials however said that they went to the spot after getting a tip-off about land grabbing by one Moazzem Hossain.
Meanwhile, Moazzem Hossain, a local who had just returned to the country claimed the land is his ancestral property.
Contacted, Forest Range Officer Anisur Haque said there was absolutely no grounds for the forest officials to collect bribes.
The injured are being treated at Sreepur Health Upazila Complex.
