Convict dies after jumping in canal
Police recovered a convicted Jubo League leader’s body from a canal in Sunamganj on Sunday evening, nearly a day after he had jumped into the waterbody to avoid arrest.
The deceased -- Anwar Hossain -- was an executive member of Chhatak upazila unit of the youth wing of the ruling Awami League, said police.
A Sylhet court sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment for stealing a microbus, said Mostofa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Chhatak Police Station.
The theft case was filed with Shahporan Police Station in Sylhet in 2014, said the OC, adding that the microbus was later recovered from Anwar’s house in Chandpur village of the upazila.
“We received his arrest warrant this month,” said OC Mostofa Kamal.
He added that they were waiting at Kachur bridge in Hason Nagar area to arrest the convict on Saturday night. Sensing their presence, Anwar jumped into the canal from the bridge, the OC further said.
Around 22 hours later, divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence found his body which was later sent to Sunamganj Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the police officer.
