Raise awareness to prevent TB: speakers
In Bangladesh, half of the population is thought to be carrying the pathogen responsible for tuberculosis (TB), which is dormant in their body. People need to be aware of the disease as it causes respiratory infections.
Speakers said this at a workshop on controlling TB at Khulna Medical College yesterday. Khulna Health Department organised the meeting under the National Directorate of Tuberculosis Control Program.
Speakers also said that TB can be cured within nine months if infected patients take medicine, and it may take 24 months for patients with further complications.
Inaugurating the daylong workshop yesterday, Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Khulna City Corporation (KCC) mayor, said ensuring cleanliness of the environment and hospitals is a must to prevent diseases.
He also said that they are planning to kill Aedes mosquitoes by using insecticide inside buses arriving in Khulna from Dhaka.
According to a report presented at the event, there were 30,202 TB patients in Khulna division in 2017. Over 10 million inhabit Khulna division and the rate of TB is 121 per lakh.
ASM Abdur Razzak, civil surgeon of Khulna, presided over the inauguration session. Shamiul Islam, director of Directorate General of Health Services; and Mohammad Helal Hossain, deputy commissioner of Khulna, spoke at the workshop, among others.
