Cop found dead in Gowainghat Police Station
Body of a sub-inspector was found hanging from the ceiling of the barrack at Gowainghat Police Station in Sylhet yesterday afternoon.
The deceased, Sudip Barua, 45, was son of Lal Barua from Sonaichhari under Rangunia upazila in Chattogram and a sub-inspector at Gowainghat Police Station.
Abdul Jalil, officer-in-charge of the police station, said, “He was on duty till 2pm and then returned to his quarter. His body was recovered an hour later and sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.”
Sudip joined police force as a constable in 1991 and was promoted to sub-inspector in 2015. He was transferred to Gowainghat on February 16 this year.
Mahbubul Alam, additional superintendent (media) of Sylhet District Police, said, “As far as we know, he was working and went to his barrack room above the station. Later, his body was found hanging in full uniform.”
“His family lives in Chattogram and they have been informed. He used to stay in the barrack alone,” Mahbubul said.
He added that all senior officials of district police rushed to the spot and police will be investigating the matter thoroughly.
