For Re-polls to Ducsu: 4 independent candidates on fast unto death
Four independent candidates, who lost in Monday's Ducsu election, began a fast unto death yesterday at the base Raju Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus, demanding re-elections and resignation of the vice-chancellor.
They started the hunger strike around 5:00pm to press home their demand.
Of the four, Tauhid Tanjim ran for the post of transport affairs secretary, Md Mayeen Uddin for cultural affair secretary from Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Shoaib Mahmud for literature affair secretary from Dr Mohammad Shahidullah Hall and Anindya Mandal for a member post from Jagannath Hall.
A student of the university's mass communication and journalism department Rafia Tamanna later joined them, expressing solidarity to the protest.
They said they had placed several recommendations to the university authorities for holding an election in a free, fair and transparent manner. But the authorities held the election ignoring all their recommendations, they added.
“We will continue our fast until death if the authorities do not meet our demand,” said Touhid.
Anindya said, “The results of Ducsu and hall union polls have been fabricated. The university authorities staged a drama in the name of an election.”
In the central union election, the ruling party-backed Chhatra League panel bagged 23 of the 25 posts, including the posts of General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary. The same panel has secured both the VP and GS posts in 10 of the 13 male dormitories while the independent candidates won both the VP and GS posts in three of the five female dormitories.
