Youth to die for killing former wife

A court here yesterday sentenced a youth to death for killing his former wife in 2016.

The convict is Suman Ali, 25, son of Amir Hossain of Choitanyapur-Miapara village in Shibganj upazila.

According to the prosecution, Suman often tortured his wife Farzana Akhter Sima over family issues since their marriage in 2012. The couple have two-year-old son Siyam.

In December 2015, Suman divorced his wife at a local arbitration meeting.

After the incident, Suman tried to bring his son back with him several times but failed. He often harassed Sima for this.  

On the night of October 7 in 2016, Suman entered the house of Sima's father in the area and stabbed Sima and her mother Diluara Begum. Sima died on the spot. Locals caught Suman red-handed. He was later handed over to police.

The following day, the victim's brother Kamruzzaman filed a murder case, accusing Suman with Shibganj Police Station.

Inspector Sarwar Rahman of the police station submitted charge sheet against Suman on January 6 in 2017.

After examining witnesses and evidence, Additional District and Sessions Judge Shawkat Ali found Suman guilty and pronounced the verdict.
