Journos can use motorbikes on election day: EC
The Election Commission yesterday okayed plying of motorcycles by journalists on the election day (December 30), provided that they display the approval sticker of the commission.
Asadul Haq, EC deputy director (public relations), told The Daily Star that the previous ban is not valid for motorbikes with stickers provided by the EC. The vehicles used for transporting newspapers will be allowed to ply the roads without any sticker, he said.
The move comes a day after the Editors' Council wrote to the commission to ensure mobility of journalists for election observation and media coverage. On December 21, an EC guideline for journalists mentioned that no EC sticker would be given for motorcycles.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement yesterday said nine international organisations and a dozen foreign missions are set to observe the election with their 188 observers.
In addition, 56 foreign journalists and media personnel are set to cover the election. A number of them are already in the country.
The government has already set up an International Election Observers' Coordination Cell. A unit of the cell started operating at Sonargaon hotel while a help desk is already operational at Dhaka airport.
