A celebration of Bangladesh girls’ achievement in sports
The Australian High Commission in Dhaka acknowledged the leadership of Bangladeshi girls’ and women in different sports in celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2018.
The female champions in their specific categories were honoured with certificates for their leadership in sports.
The event was attended by table tennis player Zobera Rahman Linu, Bangladesh women’s team cricketer Shathira Jakir Jesy, Bike rider Atiqua Binte Baqui, Wrestler Sherin Sultana, Weight lifter Mabia Akhtar and swimmer Mafuza Akter Sheela. Sports Journalist Fariha Afasana Kanta was also part of the group while 50 girls from BRAC adolescent clubs also participated in the celebration.
A motivational clinic was also organised where the sportswomen shared stories of their achievements and how they go about overcoming challenges.
Ms Penny Morton, the Australian High Commission’s Chargé de ’Affairs hosted the event. During the event she congratulated the girls on their achievements and said: “There should not be any disparity in sports, nor in the workplace, nor in life between men and women. Women and men should be seen as, and treated as, equals in all respects.”
