President asks police force to serve, not to harass
President Abdul Hamid yesterday asked police to make sure that general people do not face any harassment when they go to them seeking help and services.
“The people who are in trouble go to you (police) with a hope to get justice and services. You must ensure that no service-receiver faces any harassment. As members of service-oriented agency, you should perform your duty with a service-providing mentality,” he told a programme at Bangabhaban, marking Police Week 2017.
“Getting the security of their lives and property is the right of people, not the mercy of anyone (police). You (police) should remember that you get salaries and allowances from public money,” he said.
Hamid said police have submitted charge-sheets before courts in many serious cases while many accused were convicted in the cases, which helped them gain public trust. Apart from ensuing internal security, he said, the police force is also showing its excellent professionalism in the UN peace missions abroad.
About the changing nature of crimes, Hamid said social and global perspectives are changing fast due to globalisation, while the advancement of ICT is affecting public life apart from bringing changes in the intensity and area of crimes. The capacity of police must be enhanced to face this global challenge.
The president said media frequently report that a few members of law enforcement agencies are involved in drug trading and that is why the police must be aware of it.
