Flood hits 59 upazilas hard: Minister
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya today said 59 upazilas in 16 districts have been inundated so far by floodwater.
The minister came up with the figure at a press briefing at the auditorium of Disaster Management Department this morning.
Some 14.75 lakh people from around 3.93 lakh families have been marooned due to the flood, Maya said.
However, 69 shelter centers have been opened in the flood-affected areas where 7,000 affected people have taken shelter so far, he added.
Maya said his ministry has already sent 350 medical teams to the affected areas to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases among the flood victims.
Some 13,000 tonnes of rice and Tk 550 crore have been distributed as relief among the flood-hit people, Maya said adding if any flood-affected district administration seeks more help, his ministry is ready to provide that.
Besides, several monitoring cells, led by additional secretaries or joint secretaries of the ministry, have been formed so that the relief distribution process runs smoothly, he said.
Maya urged the socio-cultural organisations and the well-off people of society to come forward to help the flood-affected people.
