Hiron blames Hasanat Abdullah for defeat
Defeated mayoral candidate Shawkat Hossain Hiron accused Abul Hasanat Abdullah, Barisal district unit Awami League (AL) president, of “destroying his political career and sacrificing him” for the latter's “own interests”.
Hasanat had campaigned against him through his family members and AL and Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders, leading to the defeat in the June 15 Barisal City Corporation polls, said the Barisal city unit AL president.
“I will not contest in any election in the future and after presenting my explanations to the party president, I will also leave politics,” Hiron announced at a views-exchange meeting at Barisal Club on Tuesday night.
Voters of the minority communities were threatened on the eve of the election and election camps and houses of rival candidates were attacked right after election results declared Ahsan Habib Kamal the new mayor, he added.
Hiron also said he had ensured peaceful political coexistence during his tenure as the last mayor. “If anyone attacks any of my followers then I will break their hands,” threatened Hiron.
After the meeting, Barisal district unit AL Publicity Secretary Syed Anis said the allegations were not true and that frustration from the defeat despite hours of hard labour and considerable expenditure led to such comments.
He said Hasanat and all others of AL worked sincerely for Hiron and national and Hefajat-e Islam issues were to be blamed for the defeat.
