RMG factories reopen today
Garment makers yesterday decided to reopen their industrial units today after two days of production suspention in the wake of massive labour unrest following the Savar building collapse.
"We are ready to reopen our factories tomorrow [today]. We plea to the government for security so that no untoward incident takes place," Atiqul Islam, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said at media briefing at its Dhaka office.
Customers in the western world had already started demonstrating against deaths of so many workers in front of the garment brands' outlets, he said.
"We welcome the government for arresting the owner of the faulty plaza, Sohel Rana," he said, demanding arrest of the designers and officials of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha, who approved construction of such a faulty building.
BGMEA had already formed a nine-member team to investigate the collapse of Rana Plaza on Saturday. The team is scheduled to submit its report in 10 days.
The trade body also urged the solvent people at home and abroad to donate money for the Savar victims at the IFIC Bank Karwan Bazar Branch, AC NO 1017124226001. The swift code of the account is IFICBDDH017.
Earlier on Friday, the BGMEA announced shutdown of garment factories across the country after workers carried out vandalism at different industrial units and on the streets, demanding arrest of Sohel Rana and owners of the factories at the building.
