Quader blames organisational flaws
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday blamed overconfidence, organisational weaknesses and strategic failures behind the defeat of the Awami League-backed candidates in all four city corporation elections despite the government's successes over the past few years.
“We were stuck in the trap of overconfidence over winning in the city polls. People not only cast votes considering the candidates' development works but also took their behaviour into account,” he said.
The AL presidium member also suggested taking lessons from the defeat to make a comeback in the upcoming parliamentary election.
Those who are taking the city corporation election results as sure indications of victory in the upcoming parliamentary election are living in a fool's paradise, he added.
The former student leader was addressing the inaugural session of the first reunion of Surya Sen Hall Alumni Association at Teacher-Student Centre in Dhaka University.
Pointing out irrelevant comments being made by some political leaders, Obaidul said, “Just like some unruly drivers we find in the streets responsible for accidents, there are politicians commenting whimsically to make the political situation unstable.”
