Detectives recovered skeleton of a missing private university student from Raipura in Narsingdi on Wednesday following the confessional statement of three alleged killers who were arrested in the early hours of the same day.
Ariful Islam Pavel, a second year student of United International University, went missing from his residence at Concord Emporium at Katabon in the capital on December 26, 2012.
The arrestees are Jahangir, 23, a private university student; Faysal, 23, and Farhad.
Mohammed Mokhlesur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of police (DB south), said Jahangir was the mastermind while Faysal and Farhad were directly involved in killing of Pavel.
DB arrested Jahangir, the prime suspect in the killing, from the capital's Rayer Bazar area around 1:30am on Wednesday, Mohammed Mokhlesur Rahman told The Daily Star.
On information, Faysal was arrested from the capital's Azimpur two hours after the arrest of Jahangir. The DB then moved to Narsingdi with the duo and arrested Farhad from there.
According to their statement, the DB exhumed Pavel's skeletons from Adiabad Kandapara graveyard at Raipura around 4:00am, Mokhlesur Rahman added.
At a press briefing at Dhaka Metropolitan Police Media Centre yesterday, DMP Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam told reporters that Jahangir had allured Pavel to make money double with the help of a Dervish (saint) at Narsingdi.
Pavel felt encouraged and left his house with Tk 18 lakh.
Faysal then took him to Narsingdi, Monirul Islam said.
In the meantime, Farhad dug a grave at Adiabad Kandapara graveyard to burry Pavel after the killing, he added.
"The killers made Pavel unconscious by letting him drink juice mixed with sedative drugs. They then strangled him to death,” Monirul said. “After burial, they even set fire to Pavel's clothes and shoes to hide the sign of killing.”
The victim's family members said Jahangir was their neighbour when they used to live at Nilkhet residential area on Dhaka University campus. Pavel's father Ashraful Islam Bhuiyan is a former senior store officer of the DU who died 37 days before Pavel went missing.
Victim's mother Solema Akhter said Pavel had withdrawn Tk 12 lakh from National Bank and collected Tk six lakh from a neighbour Jewel, whom they gave money previously to invest in a business.
On December 30, four days after Pavel's missing, Solema got a text message from an unknown mobile number, reading "Mother, forgive me. I took your money without informing you. I switched my phone off as I had got married. She lives in India and I will leave for India within several days - Pavel."
"We searched Pavel frantically. My daughter Anta found his writings in his computer and on Facebook status that he went with Jahangir," said Solema. "Jahangir used to come to our house to know about Pavel since he was missing. But he remained absconding when we came to know about that."
Solema filed a case with New Market Police Station on January 2 this year which was later shifted to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
Pavel's sister Anta Islam said, "I want death penalty of my brother's killers.”
The skeletons were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for forensic and DNA test.
