Bus mishaps in Tangail, Comilla kill 16
At least 16 people were killed and 75 injured in two separate road accidents in Tangail and Comilla yesterday, reports UNB.
Of them, 12 people were killed in Tangail and the rest four in Comilla.
In Tangail, at least 12 people were killed and 50 injured as an overloaded bus skidded off the eastern approach road to Bangabandhu Jamuna Bridge and fell into a ditch yesterday.
Police said the road accident occurred at Bhabla in Kalihati thana at about 12.30 pm when the driver of Dhaka-bound coach from Bogra lost control over the steering and fell into a 20-feet roadside ditch.
Seven people died on the spot, two on way to hospital and the rest three succumbed to injuries at Tangail General Hospital, said one of the rescuers.
Identities of the dead could not be known immediately.
Of the injured, 32 were admitted to Tangail General Hospital while the rest to different clinics.
Local people rushed to the spot and took part in rescue operation.
One of the bus passengers who escaped the tragedy told UNB correspondent that the bus was overloaded. He said most of the victims were on the roof.
A case was filed with Eastern BJMB thana.
In Comilla, four people were killed and 25 injured in a bus accident near Rampur post office on Comilla-Brahmanbaria road yesterday.
The Ashuganj-bound bus from Chittagong plunged into a ditch as the driver tried to overtake a rickshaw at 2-15 pm.
Of the dead, two were identified as Taher Mia, 48, of Nabinagar and Shafiuddin, 54, of village Taichuti. The identity of two others could not be known.
Of the injured, four were admitted to CMH at Comilla, two to Comilla sadar hospital and others to different hospitals and clinics.
The driver of the bus fled the scene. A case was filed with Burichong police.
