Buet students boycott classes
Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) boycotted classes and demonstrated on Saturday demanding immediate arrest and punishment to those who attacked one of their fellows on April 9.
An unidentified man stabbed Arif Raihan Dwip, a third year student of mechanical engineering department of Buet, at Nazrul Islam Hall in broad daylight on the day.
No classes were held at Buet since Saturday morning as the students refrained from holding classes, said Dr Afsar Ali, provost of Nazrul Islam Hall.
Buet reopened Saturday after a weeklong midterm vacation.
The students brought out a procession on the campus and submitted a memorandum to Prof Nazrul Islam, vice chancellor of Buet, around 11:00am to press home their demands.
In the memorandum, the students demanded their security on the campus. They also demanded for termination of those involved in providing security to the Buet students for thier "negligence of duty"
With serious injuries to the head, back and the left eye, Dwip, a Chhatra League activist, has been undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital since April 9.
Buet BCL leaders claimed that Jamaat-e-Islami and its wing Islami Chhatra Shibir had been involved in the attack.
