Clash breaks out between BNP and BCL men in Mirpur
A clash took place between the BNP men and Govt Bangla College unit Bangladesh Chhatra League as the party's road march to press home their one-point demand reached near the college in the capital's Mirpur.
The clash started around 11:45am, shortly after BNP leaders and activists began the road march. Both sides hurled brick chunks at each other.
BNP men torched a motorcycle and a bicycle during the clash, our correspondent reports from the spot.
Several persons were injured, and people on both sides were engaged in chasing one another, armed with sticks and whatever they could find.
While a section of BNP's activists were engaged in the clash, the road march continued on its path.
The situation in the area returned to normal around 40 minutes after the clash started, by which time the procession had passed and police had arrived. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avoid any further incidents.
According to locals and students, BCL leaders and activists threw brick chunks at the road march as it passed in front of Government Bangla College.
BNP leaders and activists said BCL leaders and activists first threw bricks at them. Subsequently, BNP leaders and workers participating in the march entered the college premises, chasing the BCL activists and throwing bricks.
BNP activists vandalised the college gate and set fire to a motorcycle and bicycle in front of the main gate.
BNP's leaders and activists started their road march programme at 11:30am today to press home their one-point demand for polls under a non-party interim government on the streets.
They started the march from Gabtoli's SA Khalek Bus Counter area. They will end the march at Roy Shaheb Baazar intersection in the capital.
