The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams for eight general education boards across the country begin today.

On the day, candidates will sit for the Bangla First Paper exam from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Students registered with the Chittagong, Madrasa, and Technical Education Boards, on the other hand, will not begin taking their exams until August 27, as the HSC and equivalent exams for these boards were postponed by 10 days due to the monsoon flood.

This year, the exams will be held for full marks and on a curtailed syllabus for all the subjects except Information and Communications Technology, which will be held for 75 marks instead of 100 marks.

On account of the exams, all coaching centres across the country will remain closed from August 14 to September 25.

Last week, there were student protests across the country demanding that the exams be postponed, citing the fact that they did not have enough time to prepare and that many were infected with dengue.

A total of 13,59,342 students have registered for the HSC and equivalent exams. Of them, 6,88,887 are boys and 6,70,455 are girls.

A total of 11,08,594 students will sit for the HSC exams; 98,031 for Dakhil; and 1,52,717 for vocational tests under the technical education board.

The number of examinees has increased by 1,55,935 compared to last year.
