Incumbent official of Rajuk gets 6yrs in jail for illegally amassing wealth
A Dhaka court today sentenced an incumbent official of Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakka (Rajuk) to six years imprisonment in a case filed for amassing wealth worth Tk 1.36 crore through illegal means and concealing information of Tk 56.87 lakh in his wealth statement.
Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-9 handed down the sentence in absence of Rajuk's assistant authorised officer Md Ali Azam Miah at the court.
Before giving the judgement, defence lawyer submitted a petition, seeking an adjournment as his client remained absent in court.
The judge, however, dismissed the defence pleas, cancelled bail of the accused, declared him 'fugitive' and pronounced the judgment.
The judge issued an arrest warrant against the convict. The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender, said the judge.
The judge directed the authorities concerned to confiscate Tk 1.36 crore in favour of the state.
Earlier the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 11 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
According to the case statement, it was alleged that Ali Azam while serving as an authorised officer of Rajuk acquired Tk 1,36,54,410 through illegal means and concealed information of Tk 56,87,110 in his wealth statement.
Following the incident, ACC Deputy Director Rahila Khatun filed a case against Ali Azam with Ramna Model Police Station. After an investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet against the accused on February 8 of 2018.
