Ekattor TV journalist Shakil Ahmed gets 4 weeks' anticipatory bail
The High Court today granted anticipatory bail for four weeks to Ekattor TV journalist Shakil Ahmed in a case filed against him on charges of establishing sexual relationship with a news presenter with false promises.
The bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order after hearing a bail petition.
Shakil Ahmed, head of news at Ekattor TV, appeared in-person before the HC bench during the hearing.
The court granted bail to Shakil Ahmed considering that there was no specific rape allegations against him in the case filed by the news presenter, Shakil's lawyer Al Masud Begh told The Daily Star.
The plaintiff's lawyer Sarwar Hossain told this correspondent that Shakil Ahmed has to surrender to the lower court concerned in four weeks in connection with the case.
The complainant will appeal before the Appellate Division, challenging the HC order of bail, if the state does not move the apex court, Sarwar added.
Lawyer Murad Reza placed the arguments on behalf of Shakil during the bail petition hearing.
In the petition, Shakil said the case was filed against him on false charges in order to harass and malign him, his other lawyer Al Masud Begh told The Daily Star.
On November 4, a former news presenter of Deepto TV filed the case against Shakil under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Gulshan police station.
In the case, she also alleged that Shakil Ahmed had also forced her to abort her seven-month-old fetus.
