Businessman hacked dead
A traders' association leader, who was injured in an attack in Kamalganj upazila on Sunday afternoon, died at a hospital in Sylhet the same night.
The victim, Nazmul Islam, 34, a hardware businessman, was president of Chaitraghat Traders' Association in the upazila.
Officer in Charge (OC) of Kamalganj Police Station Eardous Hasan quoted locals as saying that a group of criminals, equipped with sharp weapons, waylaid Nazmul while he was going to his hardware shop in Chaitraghat Bazar on Sunday afternoon.
At one stage, the gang hacked Nazmul indiscriminately and later severed his both legs before fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured.
Hearing Nazmul's cry for help, people nearby went to the spot, rescued him and rushed him to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, from where he was later shifted to Sylhet Women Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated, the OC added.
Nazmul succumbed to his injuries the same night while undergoing treatment there.
Besides, while injured Nazmul was being taken to the hospital he mentioned names of at least four of the attackers in the video captured from his mobile phone set, he further said, adding that the young businessman might have been killed over personal enmity.
OC (Investigation) of the police station Sohel Rana said slain Nazmul's brother filed a case with the police station accusing 14 people including one Jewel Ahmed, 40, of the same area.
Mentionable, Jewel and Nazmul had personal enmity over establishing supremacy among local traders and Jewel was seriously injured in an attack allegedly by Nazmul and his men around one and a half years ago.
