3 bodies recovered in Buriganga waterbus capsize
Three bodies were recovered after a waterbus capsized following a collision with a sand-laden bulk carrier in the Buriganga river near Telghat area of Keraniganj tonight.
Shahinur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the development to The Daily Star.
Two of the three deceased have been identified so far -- Md Fahim, 22, of Joypara of Dhaka's Dohar upazila and Md Ali, 14, of Chunkuthia of Keraniganj.
Fahim was a private job holder and Ali worked in a cloth shop.
When fire service brought the bodies to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, duty doctors declared them dead, hospital sources said.
At least three were admitted to the hospital who were undergoing treatment.
Fire Service has so far rescued eight people alive but unconscious, said Rafi Al Faruk, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters.
Two units of Sadarghat River Fire Station and one unit from Siddikbazar are carrying out rescue operations.
It is believed that most of the passengers swam ashore as it sank near the shore.
The collision took place around 8:15pm when the waterbus from Dhaka's Sadarghat was approaching its destination in Telghat. Around 60 people were on the vessel, Sub-Inspector Rezaul Karim of Sadarghat River Police Station, who was in charge of the rescue mission, told The Daily Star.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport (BIWTA) Joint Director Alamgir Kabir said he was on the spot and operations were ongoing to rescue the survivors.
