AL leader hacked in Chittagong
A local Awami League (AL) leader was hacked at Bandartila area under Bandar Police Station in the city yesterday evening.
The victim was identified as Mohammad Aslam, former councillor of ward No. 39 of Chittagong City Corporation.
Jahedul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bandar Police Station, said, "Miscreants hacked Aslam around 7:30pm when he was coming by a rickshaw from Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) area to Cement Crossing area, leaving him injured critically."
Aslam was rushed to a private clinic, police added.
He was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
He was undergoing treatment there till filing of the report late in the evening.
In protest at the attack, hundreds of supporters of Aslam held demonstrations, put barricade on the road, and vandalised five to six shops and vehicles in the area, sources said.
Vehicular movement to and from CEPZ to Airport remained suspended for around one and a half hours.
On information, police rushed to the spot and removed the barricade by dispersing the demonstrators at around 9:00pm.
Anindita Barua, additional deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (Bandar zone), said, “We are not sure about the motive of the attack."
"We are looking into the matter," he added.
