4 bloggers sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent four bloggers to jail in two case filed against them for hurting religious sentiments of the people using social media.
The bloggers are: Subrata Adhikari Shuvo, 24, a master's student of Dhaka University, Russel Parvez, 36, a teacher at an English medium school, Mashiur Rahman Biplob, 42, and Asif Mohiuddin, 28.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah passed the order after they were produced before the court on completion of their different terms of remand.
Shuvo, Parvez and Biplob were produced before the court after completion of their seven-day remand while Asif on expiry of his four-day remand in two phases.
The court also fixed April 15 for hearing on their bail petitions submitted by their lawyers.
Placing the forwarding reports before the court, two inspectors of Detective Branch of police Sajjad Hossain and Mainul Islam, also the investigation officers of the two cases, said they interrogated the arrestees intensively and gathered important information from them about the comments, which “hurt religious sentiments of the people."
The information which was derived from them was being verified. Moreover, legal action under the existing law will be taken against them within a short time. So, they should be confined in jail custody until the investigation of the case concludes, the IO said.
Detectives on the first week of April arrested the four bloggers from different parts of the capital for their alleged involvement with writing “derogatory contents about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)” on the internet.
