Ctg Jamaat ameer to be quizzed at jail gate

A Chittagong court yesterday gave permission to quiz Jamaat-e-Islami Chittagong city unit Ameer ANM Shamsul Islam for two days at jail gate in a vandalism and an arson case.
The order came after rejecting both remand and bail prayer of Shamsul, who was rearrested before Chittagong Central Jail on Wednesday. The court also asked police to submit the report within seven days.
Shamsul was arrested on May 12 with bomb-making materials in their Chittagong city office.

 

One held with 10 gold bars in Ctg

Police detained a person with 10 gold bars, worth around Tk 80 lakh and weighing 1.6Kg in Banopukur area of Lohagara upazila of Chittagong yesterday.
Tipped-off police stopped a Chittagong-bound bus and detained Sujan Dhar, 35, of Chakoria upazila of Cox's Bazar, after chasing him while he was fleeing from the bus sensing police presence, said police.

 

Man detained with 600 Yaba tablets in Ctg

Police detained a man with 600 Yaba tablets worth Tk 1.2 lakh from in front of Jela Parishad Market at Laldidhir Par in Chittagong city yesterday, says a press release.
Abdul Malek, 42, of Balukhali village under Ukhia upazila of Cox's Bazar came from Teknaf in the morning and went there to sell those tablets.

 

Saida Muna Tasneem new ambassador to Thailand

The government has decided to appoint Saida Muna Tasneem, currently serving as a director general in the foreign ministry, as the new ambassador of Bangladesh in Thailand.
A career diplomat, Tasneem belongs to the 11th batch of BCS (foreign affairs) Cadre.
In her diplomatic career, she served in Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York and Bangladesh High Commission in London in various capacities, said a foreign ministry press release yesterday.

 

Speaker gets another PhD

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury received an honourary Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Essex in its graduation ceremony on Wednesday.
Pro-chancellor of the university, David Boyle handed over degree to the Speaker in recognisiton of her significant work both as a campaigner for women's rights and for becoming the first female speaker of the Bangladeshi parliament, said a press release.
