Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) arranged a mourning programme at the Central Shaheed Minar premises on March 7 to pay tribute to the departed souls and victims of the BDR headquarters tragedy. The programme featured songs, reading out excerpts from newspapers and lighting up candles. District wings of BGTF arranged similar mourning programmes simultaneously across the country.
At the Shaheed Minar, the programme began with observing a one-minute silence. M. Hamid, chairman, BGTF; noted author Syed Shamsul Haque and Jhuna Chowdhury, secretary general, BGTF spoke on the occasion.
In his speech M. Hamid said, “The carnage at BDR headquarters not only distressed us but also stained our image at international level.”
After Hamid's speech noted Tagore singer Bulbul Chowdhury rendered “Shamukhey shanti parabar.” Among others, Nargis Chowdhury and Mahiuzzaman Chowdhury performed “Baro bedonar moto korey bejechho” and “Pother shesh kothaye” respectively.
Theatre personality Liaquat Ali Lucky read out a newspaper article on the BDR mutiny written by renowned theatre personality Professor Momtazuddin Ahmed.
The brief mourning programme wrapped up with lighting hundreds of candles as Sharmin Shathi Islam was singing “Mago amar jey bhai jibon diye.”
