Manmohan to undergo heart surgery
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is to undergo a coronary artery bypass surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) today, an official announcement said.
Pranab Mukherjee is likely to take the office in his absence.
The surgery on the 76-year-old prime minister would be performed by a team of doctors drawn from the AIIMS and the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai, the announcement said.
Singh had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery in the United Kingdom several years ago and underwent an angioplasty in the Escorts Heart Institute five years ago.
Singh's personal physician Dr KS Reddy said the prime minister is "hale and hearty".
The problem of Singh came to light when he had gone to the AIIMS for a routine medical check-up.
