7 out of 18 runners still face cases
Seven out of 18 candidates in the four constituencies in Satkhira are accused in 13 criminal cases.
Three of them belong to Jamaat-e-Islami, and one each of BNP, Jatiya Party (Ershad), NAP (Bhasani) and Zaker Party.
The cases were filed on charges of murder, forgery, extortion, corruption and creating violence, according to affidavits submitted by the seven candidates to the returning officer.
All the accused have been granted bail either by the High Court or by lower courts.
Satkhira district BNP president Habibul Islam Habib, a nominee of four-party alliance in Satkhira- 1 (Tala-Kalaroa) constituency, is charge-sheeted in the sensational Tala upazila BNP president A B M Altaf Hossain murder case. He also faces an extortion case and another for stamp forgery.
Two other cases for alleged involvement in extortion corruption fled by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are now under investigation.
Jamaat leader and former lawmaker Maulana Abdul Khaleque Mondal contesting from Satkhira-1 (Sadar) is accused in a case filed with the Women and Children Repression Preventive Court for allegedly provoking the complainant to file a murder case with Sadar thana against some innocent people to save the killer by concealing facts.
He also faces two other cases for extortion and cheating, filed with Sadar thana. He was granted bail by the High Court.
Former Jamaat lawmaker Maulana Riasat Ali contesting from Satkhira-3 (Assassuni and Debhata upazila and four unions in Kaliganj upazila) also faces two cases for extortion and cheating, filed with a court in Satkhira. These are under investigation.
Jamaat leader Gazi Nazrul Islam contesting from Satkhira-4 (Shyamnagar upazila and eight unions in Kaliganj upazila) is a charge-sheeted accused in a case filed by ACC on December 1 for amassing wealth beyond his legal income.
He also faces an extortion and a cheat case filed with Shyamnagar police station, which are under investigation.
Jatiya Party leader Golam Reza, a nominee of the grand alliance in Satkhira-4 was convicted to 8 month's rigorous imprisonment in a case filed with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court. He was released on bail granted by the High Court.
National Awami Party (NAP-Bhasani) leader Abdul Hai, contesting from Satkhira-4, is accused in a case filed with Women and Children Repression Preventive Court in Narail. He was released on bail.
Zaker Party leader Sheikh Hasan Ali, also contesting from Satkhira-4, faces a case filed with a court in Rajbari allegedly for possessing illegal wealth.
On contact, former lawmakers Habibul Islam Habib of BNP and Abdul Khaleque Mondal, Riasat Ali and Gazi Nazrul Islam of Jamaat and JP candidate Golam Reza said cases filed against them are false and baseless.
