Shahriar Kabir cleared of sedition case
A Dhaka court yesterday cleared writer-columnist Shahriar Kabir from a sedition case filed in December 2001 as the charges brought against him were found "fabricated" and "concocted".
Investigation officer of the case Fazlul Kabir of Criminal Investigation Department submitted the final report to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka on October 18 this year, praying for Shahriar's discharge.
After scrutinising the case dockets, Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order.
Police arrested Shahriar at Zia International Airport on November 22, 2001 on suspicion after he returned from Kolkata and seized some cassettes and CDs on torture on minority people immediately after the 2001 national election.
After the case was filed with the Airport Police Station on December 8 that year, the then investigation officer Munshi Atiqur Rahman took Shahriar on remand and forced him to give confessional statements but failed, the final report said.
Earlier this year, Shahriar was relieved of sedition charges in another case filed in November 2001.
