‘Extortionist’ falls sick at court, dies in hospital
An alleged extortionist, who was arrested by Rab personnel Thursday evening, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after he was taken to the hospital from Mirpur Police custody yesterday.
Meanwhile, a shop employee was murdered at South Mugda under Sabujbagh police station yesterday.
The alleged extortionist Ratan Ahmed, 27, son of Rezaul Karim of Shahjadpur in Sirajganaj, fell sick on court premises and was declared dead on his arrival at DMCH at about 2:00pm.
Mirpur police said Ratan, A resident of Darussalam Road in Mirpur, was arrested by Rab-4 member on charge of demanding Tk five lakh from a mobile phone businessman at Shah Ali Shopping Complex.
Mahiuddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mirpur Police Station, told The Daily Star that Rab-4 members handed over Ratan to them on Thursday night.
“After filing an extortion case against Ratan, we sent him to the court where he fell sick,” the OC said, adding that Ratan was immediately taken to the DMCH where the doctors declared him dead.
The shop employee, Ershad Ali, 22, son of Ukil Uddin of Karimganj in Kishorganj district, was found dead inside the storeroom of Laxmipur General Store at South Mugda.
Police said Ershad went to sleep with another employee of the shop, appointed recently, in the storeroom on Thursday night and was found dead in the morning.
Police suspect involvement of the other employee in the killing, as he remained missing since morning.
Shop owner Solaiman told police that Ershad had been working in the shop for the last four years.
