Shahriar Kabir cleared of sedition charges
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has submitted a final report, clearing writer-columnist Shahriar Kabir of a sedition case filed in December 2001.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (CID) Fazlul Kabir, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka, on October 18.
The court will decide on December 3 whether the final report will be accepted or not.
In the report, the IO mentioned that the charges brought against Shahriar Kabir were found to be false, fabricated and concocted. He prayed for discharging Shahriar from the sedition case.
Shahriar Kabir was arrested at Zia International Airport under section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) on November 22, 2001 on his return from Kolkata.
Police also seized some cassettes and CDs on torture on minorities in Bangladesh after the national election on October 1 of 2001 from his possession.
On December 8 the same year, a sedition case was filed with Airport Police Station against Shahriar Kabir.
Following the case, the then investigation officer (IO) Munshi Atiqur Rahman took Shahriar Kabir on remand and tried to pressurise Shahriar Kabir to give confessional statements, but failed.
Shahriar Kabir was earlier cleared of another sedition case filed with Motijheel Police Station in November 2001.
