Preserve archaeological sites
Speakers at a seminar yesterday urged the authorities concerned to preserve the country's glorious ancient history and traditional archaeological sites for the future generation.
Speaking at the seminar titled 'Ancient history of Bangla and Archeology' at the central auditorium of Jahangirnagar University (JU), they said Bangladesh has a glorious history and rich archaeological sites and resources found in various excavations bear testimony to the golden and traditional ages of this region now known as Bangladesh.
They underscored the need for unearthing the real ancient history and the archaeological treasures to make them familiar with the present as well as the future generation of the country.
Presided over by President of Bangladesh Itihash Samity (BIS) Prof Syed Anwar Hossain, JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Muniruzzaman inaugurated the seminar.
Bangladesh Itihas Samity (BIS) and JU Archaeology Department jointly organised the daylong seminar, divided into three sessions.
Anwar Hossain laid stress on knowing various languages to unearth the hidden ancient history of Bangladesh.
“We should know at least three languages including Sangskrit and English to explore the ancient history and tradition of the territory,” he said.
The lack of knowledge about languages, he said, bar unearthing of the real history of our motherland.
Prof Muniruzzaman said science is inseparable from history and archaeology as far as the detection of the historical sites is concerned.
Chairman of JU Archaeology Department Prof Ashit Baron Pawl, seminar member-secretary Prof Muzammel Haque and BIS General Secretary Prof Nurul Huda Abul Monsur also spoke at the seminar.
A total of eight keynote papers were presented in the seminar.
