Home orders more probe into Nasreen Huq's death
The home ministry yesterday directed investigators to conduct further investigation into the death of Nasreen Parveen Huq, former ActionAid Bangladesh country director, as the victim's family members maintain that the incident of her death was murder, not an accident.
"Although the death is yet to be ascertained as murder, the meeting directed the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) to conduct further investigation since her family is not ready to accept that she died in an accident," a home ministry official said quoting yesterday's discussions at a meeting of the ministry's monitoring cell that oversees sensational cases.
Ten sensational cases were discussed during the meeting presided over by Home Adviser Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin.
On April 24, 2006, Nasreen succumbed to her injuries at Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka after she was hit by her own car, driven by driver Zakir Hossain, at the car park of her residence the same day.
Nasreen's husband Nurul Islam Bhuiyan Chhoton filed a criminal case with Dhanmondi Police Station accusing car driver Zakir of killing Nasreen by reckless driving. Zakir first rammed his wife with the vehicle and then dashed an open door of the car against her, leaving her severely injured in the knees, the husband said in the first information report.
Additional Home Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid briefed reporters on the meeting of the monitoring cell afterwards.
The probe into the August 21 grenade attack on Awami League (AL) president Sheikh Hasina while she was attending an AL rally on Bangabandhu Avenue is almost complete and charge sheet of the case would be submitted soon after scrutinising the investigation report, he said. "The investigation is at the final stage…details are now being looked into."
The attack on the rally left 24 people killed and about 300 maimed.
The motive of the attack was diverted to different directions before, he said adding that they have been closely monitoring the developments in the case to stop recurrence of similar attempts.
The meeting also directed investigators to look into the murder of Tasmir Hossain Munni at Gulshan in February. Munni's death was suicidal in nature, says the post-mortem report.
The participants of the meeting were told that progress in the investigation of the following cases was satisfactory: schoolteacher Mahbuba Begum murder at Khilagaon, Ramzan Ali murder in Turkey Associate at Ramna, Torab Ali murder at Tejgaon and domestic help Sumi killing at Adabar in the city.
However, progress in one murder case -- murder of Mohammad Ali, chairman of Talora UP of Bogra -- was reported unsatisfactory.
The home secretary and officials from police, Detective Branch and Rapid Action Battalion attended the meeting among others.
