Tax-dodging case against Pankaj illegal
The High Court (HC) yesterday declared illegal the proceedings of a tax-dodging case against jailed Awami Swechhasebak League leader Pankaj Debnath.
A division bench comprising Justice MA Rashid and M Miftah Uddin Chowdhury delivered the judgment, quashing the initiation of the case proceedings in a special court.
The High Court made its rule absolute upon a petition filed for Pankaj, convicted in another case, on grounds of procedural flaws in initiating the case and giving sanction by the NBR for filing the case.
On August 27 last year, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed the case against Pankaj on charges of non-submission of his income-tax return and concealing information about his assets, which is punishable offence under the law.
Advocate M Enayetur Rahim appeared for Pankaj, already serving a 13-year jail term for amassing wealth worth about Tk 65 lakh by illegal means.
