Ex-MP Lalu jailed in relief misuse case
Three BNP leaders including former lawmaker Helaluzzaman Talukdar Lalu were sentenced to different terms of punishment for misappropriating government relief materials.
The other convicts are Bogra BNP general secretary Saiful Islam Saiful and local BNP leader Shokrana.
Bogra speedy trial tribunal judge AM Ferdous Alam yesterday sentenced Lalu to two years' rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk 5,000 in default of which he has to spend three more months in jail.
Saiful and Shokrana, also accused in murder cases, were sentenced to one-year's rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000 in default of which they have to suffer another three months' rigorous imprisonment.
Lalu was arrested at his house on February 14 while Saiful and Shokrana were arrested at Shokrana's warehouse on February 11.
Meanwhile, police yesterday submitted charge sheet against former BNP lawmaker Jainal Abedin Faruk and two others in a Tk 2-lakh extortion case, reports our Noakhali correspondent.
Local BNP leader Giasuddin Gedu filed the case with Senbagh Police Station against the former BNP lawmaker of Noakhali-1 constituency on June 5 this year.
The plaintiff alleged that the former BNP lawmaker and his accomplices demanded Tk 2 lakh from him during the tenure of the BNP-led coalition government.
Kaishunnu Barua, sub-inspector of Senbagh Police Station yesterday submitted the charge
sheet to first class magistrate Nazmun Nahar against the former BNP lawmaker, his cousin and local BNP leader Abdullah Al Mamun and UP chairman Ali Ur Rahman.
Jainal Abedin Farukh is behind bars while the other accused are on the run.
