BCL men attack JCD rally at Sust
Five JCD activists were injured in an attack by BCL activists and as many buses were vandalised by the former at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) in Sylhet city yesterday.
Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) suddenly came under attack near a university roundabout as they brought out a procession around 9:30am to mark the birth anniversary of BNP's Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Activists of Awami League-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) swooped on the procession with sticks and iron rods and snatched a banner from the JCD men before torching it, witnesses said.
Following the attack, the JCD men gathered at the university's main gate and vandalised five university buses.
Sust JCD convener SM Jahangir said, “We demand exemplary punishment of the BCL attackers by November 23. Otherwise, we will call a strike on November 24 [scheduled for the university's admission tests].â€
The BCL convener said the JCD men are intent on causing disruptions on the campus ahead of the admission tests.
The BCL activists later held a rally in front of the central library, with Sust BCL convener Shamsuzzaman Chowdhury in the chair. Speakers at the rally demanded that the Jamaat, JCD and Shibir be banned in the country.
The university's Assistant Proctor Himadri Sekhar Roy said the proctorial body held a meeting in the afternoon and was preparing to file a case against the JCD men for vandalising university buses.
Besides, the university authorities have imposed restrictions on all kinds of demonstrations on campus till November 24, he added.
Gousul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, said police have been deployed on campus following the attack.
