'Abducted' Cuet student returns
A student of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet), who has been missing since May 23, came back to his house in the capital yesterday.
Arafat Rahman Bayezid, 23, a fourth year student, was abducted on his way back to the campus from Chittagong city that day, said his elder sister, Asifa Ferdaus.
He reached his house in Kalyanpur around 10:00am yesterday. He is safe.
Talking to this correspondent over phone, Asifa quoted his brother as saying that a gang of three or four men got Arafat into a microbus at Bahaddarhat bus terminal around 8:30pm on May 23.
They took about Tk 1200 and a mobile phone from him and drove him to an ATM booth of Dutch Bangla Bank in Agrabad but failed to withdraw money as it was out of order.
He was then taken to Sylhet city and made to withdraw Tk 300. He had been confined in a dark room there till Sunday.
The abductors also asked him to call his parents for ransom, but he could not make any call, as he left the SIM card containing the phone number of his parents back at his hall.
Arafat was then taken to Panchagarh district and left on the highway early hours of Monday. With the assistance of locals, he rode a Dhaka-bound bus home Tuesday night.
The Cuet provost said the university authorities were informed of Arafat's comeback.
