The Election Commission (EC) has so far listed 2,054 inmates of Dhaka Central Jail as voters, said sources.
The voter-listing inside the jail began Thursday. The EC staff and army personnel have been doing the job with assistance from 25 convicts serving rigorous imprisonment.
On the opening day, 1,002 prisoners hailing from Dhaka district were put on the roll while the number was 1,052 on the second day.
Talking to The Daily Star, Deputy Inspector General of Police (prisons) Maj Shamsul Haider Siddique said, “In the first phase, those from Dhaka district would be listed and gradually the others.”
Detained former prime ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina who have been detained in sub-jails on the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises would also be included in the voter list.
He said, “Currently, there are around 5,500 prisoners from Dhaka district and around 2,000 of them were listed before they came to jail.”
Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Shakhawat Hossain would visit the jail today.
Sixty-seven jails across the country house around 80,000 prisoners and around 72,000 of them would be voters according to an estimate by the EC.
The prisoners would cast their votes through postal ballots.
