Student's death in road accident sparks protest
Students protesting the death of a fellow student in a road accident on Kurigram-Chilmari road in the district town blocked the road and set a BRTC bus afire yesterday morning.
Police said the accident occurred on Friday morning when a passenger bus hit Mominul Islam, a master's final year student of Accounting department at Kurigram Govt College, at Judge Court point. At that time, Momin was crossing the area by a bicycle.
Seriously injured, he was rushed to Sadar hospital and later shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died early yesterday.
As the news of his death spread, the agitated students of the college put up barricade on the road and set fire to a BRTC bus, creating a huge traffic jam on the spot.
Police lobbed several tear gas shells and charged baton to bring the situation under control.
Around 20 students were injured during the incident, witnesses said.
