Govt wants to stay in power by any means
The ruling party has adopted different strategies to stay in power by any means, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said.
“The country is not at all safe while the Awami League is in power. Professionals, students, teachers and businesspeople are in a miserable condition. All must unite to force this autocratic government to step down,” she said at a views-exchange meeting with professionals at her Gulshan office last night.
Members of pro-BNP bodies -- Association of Engineers Bangladesh (AEB) and Agriculturists' Association of Bangladesh (AAB) -- attended the meeting ahead of the BNP's March 12 rally in the capital.
The BNP chairperson will sit with the leaders of allied and like-minded parties tomorrow to discuss preparations for the March 12 programme.
Khaleda is expected to announce tougher anti-government programmes on the day to exert pressure on the government to restore the caretaker government system.
“The government has adopted different strategies but we have told it that the non-party caretaker system must be restored. Otherwise, it will not be able to stay in power in the face of a mass movement.”
The BNP's acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and AEB convener and former energy adviser Mahmudur Rahman, were present at the meeting.
Earlier, Mahmudur Rahman, who is also acting editor of Daily Amar Desh, presented Khaleda Zia with copies of two books he has authored.
