'Smuggler' shot dead
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) yesterday shot dead an alleged smuggler at Datbhanga, a bordering beel (water body) area in Sadar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam, 32, son of Efaz Uddin of Baliadanga village in the upazila.
BGB sources said they chased a large gang of smugglers when they entered the country from India through the border with contraband items at about 3:00am.
Being challenged, the smugglers attacked the border guards with sharp and lethal weapons forcing the BGB men to open fire in self-defence.
Abul Kalam died on the spot while the other smugglers fled the scene leaving 376 bottles of phensidyl syrup, clothes, spears, billhooks and other weapons in the area.
