Robbers loot night coach, 9 arrested
Highway robbers blocked road by putting up logs and looted night coach in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat on Sunday night.
The spot of the robbery is about 6km away from Akkelpur police station.
Victims said a gang numbering about 20 to 24, equipped with sharp weapons, felled the roadside trees at Kecher village at around 10:00pm and put up road barricade with the logs.
The robbers first stopped a Joypurhat-bound night couch from Dhaka at around 10.10pm and looted the belongings of the passengers pointing sharp weapons at them, said Nazrul Islam of Amutra village, a passenger of the bus.
During the hour-long robbery, the gang beat up mercilessly several bus passengers, motorbike and bicycle riders and took away cash, mobile phones and ornaments.
The driver, helper and supervisor of the night coach were also not pared by the robbers.
At around 11:00pm, a patrol police team arrived at the spot on hearing the incident of robbery.
Shahidar Rahman, officer in charge of Akkelpur police station, declined to give further details saying that they have already nabbed nine people in connection with the robbery.
Two policemen have also been closed for neglect, he said.
In Brahmanbaria, police recovered the body of the leader of an inter-district robber gang from Titas River in Sarail upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Nuru Mia, 45, of the upazila. The reason behind the death could not be ascertained immediately.
Local people found the body floating in the river and informed the police. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said Nuru Mia was wanted in a number of murder, dacoity and other criminal cases.
