DU student arrested in model Adrita murder
Detectives on Thursday arrested Dhaka University student Ashish Karmaker in connection with the killing of Tahia Tabassum Adrita.
Ashish was produced before the media at the DB office on Minto Road in the city yesterday when he confessed to the killing, but said he had no intention to kill his ramp model girlfriend.
Adrita, 20, was strangled on October 30 at a house in the city's Mohammadpur, said Mahbubur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of Police. Law enforcers recovered the body the next day.
Ashish, also known as Rehan, said he went to the rooftop of the house with Adrita around 7:00pm on October 30. There they had an altercation over renting a house and going home during the Eid vacation.
At one stage, he slapped Adrita when she fell on the stairs and started to scream. To stop her screaming, he tried to squeeze her throat with her scarf.
"It was an accident," said the honours final year student of law at DU where he is also known as Bidyut.
Police arrested him from the city's Doyel Chattar area around 7:15pm on Thursday.
However, Mahbubur Rahman told reporters yesterday that the two went to the rooftop of the house to take Yaba.
He added that after killing Adrita, Ashish, himself a model, tore parts of Adrita's dress and made some injury marks on her body to make it look like that "she was raped before the murder".
Ashish developed a romantic relation with Adrita last year hiding his religious identity, Mahbubur said.
But Ashish claimed Adrita was aware of his religious belief.
Upon recovery of the body, Mohammadpur police on November 1 filed a case and later was shifted to the DB police.
